TLUMC COVID Update for 5.16.21

TLUMC Family,

You have likely seen the CDC’s update on mask-wearing that was issued yesterday, stating that those who have been fully vaccinated may now go without masks in most settings. I know that raises some immediate questions about masking in worship and other activities at Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church.

While the CDC’s new guidelines are certainly a welcome step toward normalcy, bear in mind that the State of Colorado is still under a mask mandate and our Mountain Sky Annual Conference COVID guidelines have not changed. I expect the State to issue new guidelines soon and the Conference COVID task force is meeting next week to address the CDC’s recommendations. As I have stated all along, we are continuing to comply with our Conference guidelines.

All that said, we will continue to follow our current masking and distancing guidelines for this Sunday, May 16 at all services. As soon as we have updated guidance from the State and Conference next week I will meet with Church Council to go over our next steps. We will inform you about any changes as soon as they are approved.

When we are able to ease mask restrictions for those who are vaccinated, there are few things that we must also keep in mind. First, the church cannot determine who is and who is not vaccinated, but we do recommend that those who are unvaccinated continue to mask. If you are unvaccinated and choose not to mask, you are assuming the risk. COVID is still a significant presence in our community and we want to continue to keep our congregation healthy.

In addition, when things open up we will still have a significant number of people who will choose to wear masks for a variety of reasons regardless of the updated CDC guidelines. Some may be immuno-compromised while others simply want to maintain their level of protection. We will insist on creating an environment in the church in which everyone is welcome and no one is judged or questioned for wearing or not wearing a mask. We will seek to “pursue what makes for peace and mutual edification” (Romans 14:19).

Our next Sunday after this one will be our Outdoor Service on May 23 at 11:00am. Since we will be out on the hill and enjoying God’s creation, masks will not be required at that service (remember, only one service that day). We will update you as soon as possible on what will happen for May 30 and beyond.

Thanks for your continued support and prayers.

Pastor Bob Kaylor
